People who dislike someone because of their perceived popularity or fame on Masto are wild to me. I don't know what you think life is like for people with over 1000 followers, but it ain't exactly the court of Louis XVI. The only thing folks with more followers than you get that you don't is more hostile mentions.

@jillybobww The trick is that it isnt even real. Most of those followers are long gone from abandoning the platform over the past year. Its why I want to hide follower counts. They are meaningless.

Like, literally no benefits come with Mastodon "popularity." Not money. Not privilege. Not a free toaster. You don't even get a complimentary box of cookies.

When you rant about what you perceive to be the power of "popular" posters you reveal nothing about those people. You just sound like someone who has imported their high school resentments into a different platform.

@jillybobww there are fedi famous people though (it's mostly the devs), who are universally respected for doing good work or being marketing geniuses

@jillybobww You didn't get a toaster? Did you forget to check the Free Toaster box when you signed up?

@jillybobww Sorry, I wasn't minimizing what you were saying. I like what you're saying.

@BobTarte I didn't feel minimized at all! But I could really use a toaster.

@jillybobww Our toaster just died and we had to order a brand new, princely $25 model. I think my wife killed the old one by re-toasting buttered toast a few too many time.

@BobTarte I haven't had a toaster for a while, though I do have a breakfast sandwich maker that toasts while it cooks everything else.

@jillybobww
Hahaha, it looks like it could never, ever work. But I'm assuming it does!

@BobTarte It does! The only downside is that it only toasts the outside of the bread, but you can get around that by putting the bread in there with the insides to the cook plates as the whole thing warms up.

@jillybobww
Don't do it! Don't get butter on the hot parts! I've been down that road...

@BobTarte I don't use butter, but I toast the insides bare, then put on mustard, then stack it as the instructions dictate and cook the whole thing. So the mustard parts don't touch the hot parts. Plus all the cook plates are nonstick and there are no exposed heating elements.

@jillybobww
That sounds pretty yummy. Thanks for the link.

@jillybobww
BTW, nice to meet you. Okay if I follow? (I like to ask.)

@jillybobww i believe technical term for stroking your own ego to how long your mastodon followers' list is mastorbation. I also have no idea how do these do these amply followered(intentional!) accounts, these quas- twitter celebrities attract people. Reading puddleep quasi philosophical egoposts is such a bore. Please send more fun!

@Letienne I don't know why someone else having ample followers or what they post or whether or not they post to intentionally accrue more followers bothers or harms you. If you don't like what someone posts, block them. The only egoposting I see is from the people rambling on about their noble stances against "famous" posters.

@jillybobww This is more of an inquisitive type of problem for me. The allure of popularity is easy to comprehend. That is built into us. What i have trouble understanding is the other party. So many people post nothing but odd sorts of ejaculations which do not hold any meaning to anyone but themselves. With enough persistence their names starts to burn into your feed and a sense of familiarity will start to develop in me. But god, those posts mean so little to errybody else!

@jillybobww not even remotely reflective of your.'work of art' so to speak. I dont really know you abd az a matter of fact i had managed to misread your position in the twoot i have originally responded to. Thought you were bashing people who pursue ever larger follower herds because apparently, i can't read for shit!

@Letienne Ah! No worries. Sometimes my rambles can be a bit thick to wade through.

@jillybobww here i were, bracing for a fight and you arr going be all nice and kind with me? What about my regularly scheduled release of all our repressed frustration induced toxic anger? *Loads up outrageporn.gop/r/politics?Search=trump* ahh that is the good shit... Anyway, how did you end up with this though? Was someone flaming you personally?

@Letienne No, a few people were aggressively subtooting a friend and I just thought it was BS. I personally am not Masto Famous.

@jillybobww first of all: Your black cat is adorable and almost certainly part bat. There is just no way that BatCat isn't fighting crime at nights.

@Letienne That's Maurice! I was in fact originally going to name him Bruce because I thought all black cats are secretly Batman but obviously Batman is Bruce at home. But the first time I looked into his eyes I found myself saying, "Well clearly your name is Maurice."

@jillybobww what makes a maurice a clearly marice? Where i come from, it is the stereotypical name of the jokes' witty and terribly lewd adolescent jewish boy. :)

@Letienne I don't know! That was just the thought that came to me. But I don't have that same association with the name.

@jillybobww secondly: We will to put an end to mastobullying. Where is Melania, our cylent cyber guardian when you need her?

@jillybobww turns out you are real life famous instead. Huh, the only thing i have produced is a never-ending source of disappointment!

@Letienne I am for sure not famous. I'm just somewhat adjacent to famouser people.

@jillybobww The only thick - i am sorry: t.h.i.c.c - thing here was my skull.

@jillybobww
On the other hand, it is sort of humiliating to have only 8 followers, especially when 2 of them are me from other instances and 2 of them are bots.

@BobTarte Yeah, but follower counts aren't really a reflection of how many people are reading your post when you're part of an instance, because if someone keeps a local timeline column from their instance (like I do), they see the tweets of everyone in the instance. So in essence you're followed by everyone in Kittytown at least.
