why is spelling the only type of competition that takes bee form

@kelly That actually got me to look up "Bee" on Wikipedia, and apparently, a "bee" is an old-timey word for any sort of social competitive group-work gathering. You would have logging bees and spinning bees, and the like. Guess they all fell out of favor except for spelling. Weird!
