so a series of onion articles about the recent israeli brutality in gaza has been going around

the onion is part of fusion media group, which is a division of univision, which is owned by broadcast media partners, which is led by saban capital group, whose founder and ceo is haim saban, who is a right-wing zionist

obviously a ceo can't micromanage the editorial line of every single one of their holdings. those articles may well have been written by well-meaning anti-zionists

but that doesn't mean we can ignore the ideological effects of the nature of corporate media on the content it delivers and the form in which it does so. note that the current situation is such that the media is at the limit of its ability to downplay it. you see newspapers being called out on their wishy-washy headlines and being forced to change them - to adjust their line to current attitudes

what does the onion do? it pairs pictures of dead and wounded palestinians with funny satirical ironic headlines. it's serious, but it's also a joke. what effect does that have on their liberal western audiences? it may arouse sympathy, but does it help push people towards a correct understanding of, say, us-israel relations, or away from it?

how does the form of the onion constrain its ostensible message, or contribute a more subliminal one (e.g. "everything and everyone over there is irreparably fucked up")? what is the onion *not* allowed to say?

and what is the onion *actually* saying? that the idf's actions are cruel and disproportionate. this is true. but what is the range of narratives this statement, considered on its own, can be used to support?
