The more I read up on Kirby's early life the more I wonder if he would have gotten into boxing

The man was legitimately a New York tough guy, albeit a reluctant one

One thing that confused me in the head; Silver Star was published the same time as Captain Victory, around the 1980s. Dating Morgan Miller as a Vietnam vet makes more sense, and even more sense given it was originally conceived as a movie screenplay. Still, the form is not as good as its parts when it comes to that one

It's strange to remember that Kirby once did more conventional genres like romance comics and cowboy comics before he dipped into science fiction and superheroes, but that was his foundation, and he wasn't afraid to get inspiration anywhere and everywhere, swallowing and reingesting it into something useful for him, much like his namesake Nintendo character

Actually what I'm really interested in and don't really know how to acquire is one Jack Kirby property that was created before he went to either DC or Marvel. Boys' Ranch, co-created with Joe Simon, was Kirby at his creative prime, and one of the most critically acclaimed works for both creators in their lifetime.

They claimed to have researched the comic for over a decade before even starting it, & told many stories of white men stealing, cheating, and framing Native Americans

One of Kirby's last creations that got published in his lifetime was Phantom Force. His understudy Mike Thibodeaux convinced Image to give the comic a chance, and published issues 1 and 2. After Kirby passed on, Thibodeaux continued the series on his own under his Genesis West label

And I'm really really curious where he took it as this is the cover of the last comic he managed to publish

I was thinking about all this not just because I happened to own Kirby stuff I'm catching up to, but of course because the hype machine for Ava Duvernay's New Gods movie is just getting revved up

I can't wait to see how she mixes things up

I would say Kirby's best work in his later years would have to be Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers. A lot of it is pastiche from other space faring sci fi like Star Trek and Captain Harlock, but the way Kirby imagined a world like that is frankly very very compelling. Of his independently owned work it's the one I'd want to see come to the small or big screen most

Jack didn't stop being ambitious as he got older, but with animosity brewing against Marvel, and his getting older, it's clear it became harder and harder for him to keep going as he wanted

At a certain point I was finding post Fourth World Kirby comics in bargain bins, and it was genuinely interesting where it took him. A lot of it, TBQH, was bad, but had interesting spots of brilliance or ingenuity still in it

Jack did not work on The Centurions alone. In fact, he and his co-creators comprised a Power Team of their own; Gil Kane was one of the most accomplished comics artists of all time, and Doug Wildey, the old hand at Hanna Barbera who worked on Jonny Quest, as well as Herculoids, Godzilla Power Hour, etc.

Jack had an eclectic design for flying craft (think Orion's Astro-Harness) that probably figured heavily into The Centurions' modular design

If there's anything I'd want to see from later stage Jack Kirby, it would definitely be his design work for The Centurions cartoon

I feel better not liking Silver Star seeing Goodreads reviewers generally also had mixed feelings about it

Earlier I wanted to say I had some problem with some story element or character, but I think overall the problem was execution. Jack was at least able to wrap his story up but his style of making things up as he went along clashed with the comic's ambitions for an allegorical story about military power and humanity

Homestuck. The worst thing about Homestuck is I never figured out what Homestuck is until a decade or something after it was relevant
