huh, and now i realize why i get so annoyed when i try to report to /get info from a busy family member and they don't look at me or tilt their head towards me. yeah, i can't tell if they're listening or not, but also /they aren't signaling a willingness to perform [listening] labor for me./ how dare they. :P

and most of my time out in public is when i'm working, so to me it feels rude to be out and about and /not/ signalling 'yes i see you and will respond to requests, but having said that i will now politely ignore you until asked for'. that is, unless i'm out with another person. or really just too busy with current task. or starting to run low on spoons of course :P

i wonder how much labor i really should be offering? or if i'm doing it right

been lying here thinking, realized that when i'm in public i use 'small, tight smile + lowered head or sharp nod' to signal 'i am volunteering a small amount of emotional/mental labor', such as 'i will step aside to let you pass' or 'i will answer brief work-related queries' or 'i'll move that object out of your way'. the bigger the smile or higher/more tilted-sideways the head, the more labor being offered. head down/no eye contact/no smile = too busy for you rn
