Okay. My young boy needs SUBSTANTIAL but engaging books to read this summer. No more Origami Yoda!

So... what did you read as a child that made you think? Or more importantly, made you want to be wiser and more virtuous!

He likes adventures and duck-out-of-water comedies (like Paddington). He's almost ten so some themes wouldn't be appropriate but he can handle complex writing.

@amos I just finished Sally J Pla's The Someday Birds - road trip with an autistic kid protagonist and his siblings by an author - it was a Very Wholesome read

I *think* Catherine Webb's Horatio Lyle series would be appropriate as well, that's Victorian-era science and adventure
